چکیده

The quality of the X-ray tomogram not only depends on the spatial resolution but also on the density resolution or contrast. Based on the theory of [Nucl. Instr. and Meth. 206 (1983) 541] it is concluded that the density resolution can be substantially improved by merging of pixels, referred to as binning, prior to reconstruction. We demonstrate that the quality of a given 3D-data set, i.e. the tomogram of stained biological cells seeded on a polymer multifilament yarn in phosphate buffered saline, can be optimized with respect to the product of spatial and density resolution – the image quality factor. This procedure improves or even enables the visualization and quantification of selected constituents in the tomogram. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Design of Small Animal Computed Tomography Imaging for in vitro and in vivo Studies

Introduction: Mini Computed Tomography (mini-CT) was suggested in biomedical research to investigate tissues and small animals. We present designed and built a mini x-ray computed tomography (mini-CT) for small animals as well as industrial component imaging. Materials and Methods: The system used in this study includes a X-ray tube 20kV to 160kV and a flat pa...

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

Assessment of bone fragility with clinical imaging modalities.

INTRODUCTION Osteoporotic fractures are a vital public health concern and have created a great economic burden to our society. Therefore, early diagnosis of patients with high risk of osteoporotic fractures is essential. The current gold standard for assessment of fracture risk is the measurement of bone mineral density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. However, such techniques are not ve...

Impact of Photon Spectra on the Sensitivity of Polymer Gel Dosimetry by X-Ray Computed Tomography

Introduction: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of X-ray spectra on the sensitivity of a polymer gel dosimeter imaged with a conventional computed tomography (CT) scanner. Material and Methods: The whole process of CT imaging of an irradiated polymer gel was simulated by MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. The imaging of polyacrylamide gel was accomplished by means of a co...

Absolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...
